BattleBot, my first full humanoid rig animation with a fighting robot.

As the final project of one of my animation classes, we were tasked with making a humanoid robot with rigid bound joints and animate them doing something. While my environment wasn’t as detailed as others with the project, I decided to add more visual effects in post and a second humanoid robot.

Another animation exercise, this time we were told to make a claw machine and animate it using our own rig set up with IK joints. Running off the success of my sack animtion, I made the claw a bit more complex by giving it an eye as well and bringing the sack in as part of the joke in the animation.

This was one of my first larger animations despite being just an exercise in how to animate with a rig. We were given the sack with a full rig built in and told to animate it accordingly. I took this a fair bit farther, giving the sack a face through animating a texture and putting it through a deadly obstacle course.

Who is Kevin the Dot?

Welcome to my site, I’m Alex Fatemi-Badi. You may have noticed that the site url is kevinthedot, not anything close to my actual name. The reason for that goes a bit of a ways back for me, but to put it simply, Kevin the Dot is my online persona.

Yeah, that makes it sound a lot better.

Yeah… This is something I kinda started doing back when I made my first blog for a class, just to give my posts a bit more flair. This text is meant to be “Alex” or my more professional, logical voice.

And I’m Kevin, the more personal, inner voice kind of speaker.

Kevin started out back in middle school. One of my best friends made a small, violent cartoon in PowerPoint of a small black circle going around killing stick figures. He called the cartoon, “Bob the Dot”.

Then this guy decided to plagarize the hell out of his friend.

Well, that’s partially true. I chose to follow his example and made my own PowerPoint cartoon of a similar nature. However, as with most projects I work on, I went a lot farther than I really should have, giving it some story and more characterization. This became Kevin the Dot. He went over great with all my peers, and soon enough I started making Kevin cartoons in my free time. I even made one of Bob the Dot and Kevin the Dot fighting to the death (with Bob winning) as an apology to my friend for using his idea.

Thanks for that. Was great getting cut in half.

Anyways, from there I started trying to design a full cartoon out of Kevin and other characters I had come up with. In order to pursue that goal, I decided to take a computer graphics course in high school.

And he quickly found out he was totally awful at doing 2D animation

Oddly enough, that class was the one that got me interested in 3D animation and computer graphics. Thus, in a roundabout way, Kevin led me to where I am now, taking classes in video game art and production while preparing for a digital media masters degree.

You’re welcome. Now how about getting back to trying to make me a real cartoon or something?

Well, that’s all for now.

Of course…
